The Meaning of Orpheus

The Orpheus of Greek mythology was a celebrated Thracian musician and hero. He played an important part in the expedition of the Argonauts by enabling them to resist the lure of the Sirens. Most famous was his journey into the underworld to recover Eurydice. Orpheus is believed to have invented the lyre, and such was his musical skill in its use that he is credited with the power of taming wild beast and of moving trees.

Orpheus Club was originally a Junior club of Anna Gail Wilcox. Through the years she was able to interest several of her friends and fellow teachers in Federation and in entering students in the Junior Festival.  After Traveling to Springfield several years for Festival, the decision was made to form a new district here and to hold a Junior Festival locally. District VI was federated on September 15, 1965, with six charter members and four more joining shortly after. Orpheus has grown in numbers but has continued to pursue the goal of its founders: to stimulate musical growth and appreciation in the community among young and old.
